MITOcare Diagnostics

The genetic test to determine medication metabolism

With the PharmaGenes Essentials genetic test from MITOcare Diagnostics, doctors finally have a tool at hand to analyze a patient's medication metabolism.

A complex algorithm is used to analyze 22 genetic variants with an influence on medication metabolism. This profile contains genes that are involved in the metabolism of various medicines and can therefore help with substrate selection and dosage. The genetics of the following medication groups are being investigated: Blood pressure medications, antiarythmics, antiplatelet agents, antidepressants, antipsychotics, amphetamines, antiemetics, barbiturates, corticoids and many more.

Based on these results, the doctor can adapt the medication for the analyzed patient to their individual medication metabolism. In addition, based on the results, an emergency passport is issued in haptic form (pharmaceutical passport), which can also be given to the patient.

All the information in the analysis is easy to understand and clearly visible in the form of bar charts.

Relevance of the diagnosis of pharmacogenetics

Why test?

Based on the genetic pattern, there are people who metabolize drugs quickly (fast metabolizers) and therefore do not reach the “therapeutic window” with regard to the effective dose. The drugs can therefore be ineffective because they are underdosed. In contrast, there are slow metabolizers in whom even low doses can lead to toxic events.the PubMed medical database now contains almost one billion publications for the search term “adverse drug effects”.83,054 cases from Germany were reported to the European adverse drug reaction database EudraVigilance in 2019.a dissertation published in 2016 cites an estimated range of 16,000 to 58,000 drug-related deaths in Germany each year.

What's the focus of PharmaGenes Essentials?

How DNA is decoded

The PharmaGenes Essentials genetic test uses a polygenic calculation model - this means that all individual contributions of each genetic variant in combination with the environment are taken into account (polygenic effect). The complex algorithm creates an evaluation model based on a large number of variables, i.e. genetic characteristics. The outcome of the evaluation model is more important than the number of genes that may be labeled as altered. No genetic variant should be interpreted individually. The results are presented in bar charts.

5 Making an appointment with the patient

The doctor should make an appointment with the patient for the test to be carried out in the practice

5
6
6 Read the instructions carefully

Doctor & patient should read the instructions (click here - German)carefully & completely before starting.

7 Carry out a saliva sample

In order to provide a usable saliva sample, the patient should follow the instructions exactly according to the steps given. The sample is then sent as described in the instructions. Important: The recipient address of the result is the doctor's address

7
8
8 Analysis of the DNA

After reaching the laboratory, the saliva sample is carefully analyzed & evaluated according to a complex algorithm. This can take up to 10 working days. The findings are then sent in printed form to the practice address provided.

9 Discussion of the results

The doctor will receive a folder by post with the results of the PharmaGenes Essentials genetic test and a Pharma Passport for the patient. The doctor should then make an appointment to discuss the results with the patient. At the appointment, the doctor will hand over the documents, explain the evaluation and, if necessary, adjust the dosage of any medication already prescribed to the result. The doctor should also make a note of the results in the patient's file. The patient can always carry the Pharma-Pass with them so that all information is to hand in an emergency.

Important

This genetic test has been developed for use as a professional tool for doctors and healthcare professionals. The knowledge gained can help to determine a personalized treatment, always taking care to increase efficacy while minimizing the risk of side effects.

This test and the results obtained do not claim to be a substitute for professional medical advice and treatment. The results of this genetic test do not depend on the physical, clinical or therapeutic condition of the person tested.

Disclaimer

Lifestyle genetics is a field of genetics that studies the relationship between genes and individual traits that affect a healthy lifestyle. The use of genetic predisposition information to create a dietary plan should be combined with information on physical characteristics (e.g. age, gender, etc.) and behavioral information (e.g. eating habits, physical activity, etc.). The results of the genetic test cannot be used for clinical diagnosis, disease prevention or assessment of a clinical condition. The result of the genetic test is not dependent on the physical or clinical condition or therapy management of the person tested.

FAQs

Still have questions about the PharmaGenes Essentials genetic test? Perhaps our FAQs can help. If you have any further questions, please contact us by e-mail.

How is the DNA test done? With saliva, blood or hair?

The PharmaGenes Essentials genetic test is carried out using a saliva test.

How often can such a test be carried out?

The PharmaGenes Essentials genetic test only needs to be carried out once in a lifetime.

What exactly is the result?

The PharmaGenes Essentials genetic test has an accuracy of 99%.

Why is such a test useful?

The individual effect of medication depends on the individual genetic predisposition. Genetic variants in proteins with pharmacological significance, such as enzymes, transport proteins and receptors, can influence the metabolism, transport and target structures of medication. This can alter the efficacy and tolerability of medication.

What is analyzed in this genetic test?

The PharmaGenes Essentials genetic test analyzes pharmacogenetics - the DNA and 22 genetic variants with an influence on drug metabolism.

Genes analyzed:

  • CYP2D6
Substrates: Antihypertensives, beta-blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, selective noradrenaline/dopamine reuptake inhibitors, antipsychotics, antiarrhythmics, amphetamines, antiemetics, general substrates, prodrugs (codeine, tamoxifen)
    Inhibitors: Bupropion, fluoxetine, paroxetine, etc.
    Inducers: dexamethasone, rifampicin
  • CYP2C9
Substrates: proton pump inhibitors, barbiturates, antiepileptics, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, SSRIs, MAO inhibitors, antipsychotics, clozapine, platelet aggregation inhibitors, NSAIDs, cytostatics
    Inhibitors: Fluvoxamine, ticlopidine, etc.
    Inducers: carbamazepine, prednisone, rifampicin
  • CYP2C19
Substrates: NSAIDs, Cox2 inhibitors, antihypertensives, angiotensin II blockers, oral antidiabetics, statins, anticoagulants
Inhibitors: Sulfaphenazole and others Inducers: Rifampicin SLCO1B1
    Substrates: Atorvastatin, Simvastatin

How can the results be used?

With the results, you can find out the patient's drug metabolism type and can then adapt the patient's medication to their genetic profile. This prevents the patient from receiving either an overdose or an underdose of medication.

Can both Pharma Tests be combined?

If you order PharmaGenes Advanced, there is no point in ordering PharmaGenes Essentials, as PharmaGenes Advanced contains everything that is covered by Essentials. Essentials is suitable for people who only take a few medications, the corresponding medications are listed in the PharmaGenes Essentials sample report.
